A Classic String Art Craft for Your Sukkah
We’ve been dreaming of sharing a good old-fashioned string art craft for a long time, and finally, after lots of trial and error, we’re excited to present this Sukkah Guitar String Art Project!
There’s just something about starting with a piece of bare wood, taking out a hammer and nails, and creating something beautiful from scratch. It’s the kind of project that gives you a real sense of accomplishment when you’re finished—and makes a beautiful handmade decoration to hang in your sukkah.
A Project for Those Who Love a Challenge
We want to be upfront: this project is not for everyone! It takes approximately three hours to complete and requires plenty of patience. Some parts can be tedious, especially knotting and wrapping the string around all those little nails.
But if you enjoy detailed crafts, the finished result is definitely worth the effort.
This is a great project for older girls or bochurim, or for a parent and older child to work on together. It’s also a fun project to spread out over a couple of sessions rather than completing it all at once.
Choosing Your Wood
For our guitar, we used a 9 x 18-inch piece of pine wood.
We arranged with Woodpeckers Crafts to custom-cut the wood to the correct size, making it easy to start the project with the perfect base.
We love the natural look of the unfinished pine, but you can certainly stain or finish your wood if you prefer a different look.
Make the Guitar Your Own
We chose light brown, dark brown, and gold string for a warm, natural color palette that works beautifully in a sukkah. Feel free to change the colors to coordinate with your own sukkah decor.
That’s part of the fun of string art—once you have the basic design, you can make it completely your own.
A Little Shortcut for the Letters
Originally, our plan was to string the Hebrew letters as well. Once we started working on them, though, we found that wrapping string around such small letters was just too difficult.
So we improvised!
We removed the nails from the letters and covered the letter design with rhinestones instead. It was much easier and added a pretty touch of sparkle to the finished piece.
If you have the patience and want to try stringing the letters, definitely go for it!
