Creative Recycling: DIY Washer Necklaces & Keychains
Looking for a fun, budget-friendly craft that gives new life to everyday items? These DIY washer necklaces and keychains are the perfect upcycling project!
Using simple metal washers—yes, the kind from the hardware store—you can create stylish, one-of-a-kind accessories. Add color with nail polish, string on some beads, and you’ve got a handmade piece that’s both eco-friendly and totally unique.
This project is perfect for summer activities, kids’ birthday parties or any time you want to get creative and make something cute.
Turning them into “donuts” is especially cute for a Chanukah activity.
Recommended for ages 8 and up. This craft is a great way to mix art with everyday materials .

Directions for making the donuts:
- Cover your work area.
- Using the nail polish, paint the washers. Allow some drying time between layers.
- Apply seed beads while still wet. (optional)
- Allow to dry completely.
For the necklace:
- Determine the size of your string and make a slip knot through the washer.
- Tie the ends. For a finished look add two pony beads and then knot again.
For the key chain:
- Using a 15” piece of fishing wire, make a slip knot through the washer.
- Take the 2 ends of the string and thread a couple of pony beads on to it.
- Tie the 2 ends of the string on to the key ring tightly.
- Cut off remaining thread
Caution: Make sure nail polish is completely dry before wearing.
