The Best (and Easiest!) Cookie Icing

If you’re looking for a basic, simple, reliable icing that gives your cookies and cakes a great look—this is the one. This easy recipe mixes up in minutes, pipes beautifully, and dries with a smooth finish. Whether you’re decorating sugar cookies, donuts, adding details to a cake, or just looking for a quick way to elevate your baked goods, this icing is a go-to you’ll come back to again and again.

Why We Love This Icing

This icing strikes the perfect balance: thick enough to pipe clean lines, yet thin enough to spread or fill. It’s incredibly versatile—you can:

  • Pipe borders or simple details

  • Add color for themed treats

  • Use it inside a disposable piping bag for quick, mess-free decorating

Even if you’re not creating intricate designs, using a piping bag helps keep things neat and controlled.

The Perfect Consistency

Like all icing recipes, this one may need tiny adjustments depending on humidity, sugar brand, or even how you measure.
If it feels too thick, just add a drop or two of water.
If it’s too thin, sprinkle in a bit more confectioners’ sugar.

A little adjustment goes a long way—so add slowly!

The Best Cookie Icing

Use this easy to make and use icing for cakes and cookies. Multiply as needed.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Confectioners’ Sugar
  • 1.5-1.75 Tbsp Water

Instructions

  • Place the confectioners’ sugar in a bowl.
  • Add the water gradually—start with 1.5 tablespoons and mix well.
  • Check the consistency. If needed, add a tiny bit more water to thin or a bit more sugar to thicken.
  • Divide icing and add food coloring. (optional)
  • Decorate your cookies or cake and allow to dry.

Notes

Spoon the icing into a disposable piping bag for easy and clean decorating.
Snip the end of the bag with scissors and decorate. Always start with a small hole. You can always make it larger.

Tips for Beautiful Results

  • Add gel food coloring for vibrant shades without thinning the icing.

  • Let layers dry fully before piping details on top.

  • Store covered tightly to prevent crusting if you’re prepping ahead.
