Back to School Chalkboard Treats

Looking for a fun and easy Back to School edible craft? These adorable chocolate chalkboards which are featured in this week’s Mishpacha Family Table Magazine are such a cute way to celebrate the start of a new school year!

A simple chocolate bar is transformed into a mini chalkboard by etching a message or design into the chocolate and adding a little confectioners’ sugar to make it look like chalk. Finish it off with a thin pretzel for the “chalk” and a mini marshmallow “eraser.”

Whether you make a full-size chocolate bar or cut it into smaller pieces, these sweet chalkboards are easy to customize with names, grades, ABCs, numbers or a special first-day message.

A Fun Back to School Edible Craft

We love edible crafts that are simple enough for kids to make but still have that wow—how did you do that? factor.

For these chocolate chalkboards, there’s no complicated decorating involved. Kids can use a wooden skewer to draw directly on the chocolate, making each chalkboard completely unique.

Write ABC, a child’s name or grade, draw an apple or pencil, or simply doodle away!

What You Will Need

  • Chocolate bar
  • Confectioners’ sugar
  • Wooden skewer
  • Thin pretzels (we used Bachman)
  • Mini marshmallow
  • Melted chocolate, for attaching

How to Make Chocolate Chalkboard Treats

Step 1: Etch Your Design

Use a wooden skewer to etch a design, doodle or message into the surface of the chocolate.

Step 2: Add the “Chalk”

Rub a small amount of confectioners’ sugar over the chocolate, making sure the sugar gets into all of the etched grooves.

Gently wipe away the excess confectioners’ sugar with a paper towel. The sugar left behind in the grooves will highlight your design and give it the look of white chalk on a chalkboard.

Step 3: Add the Chalk and Eraser

Use a small dab of melted chocolate to attach a thin pretzel to the chalkboard as your piece of “chalk.”

Attach a mini marshmallow alongside it to create an adorable little “chalkboard eraser.”

Allow the melted chocolate to set completely before moving or packaging your treats.

Make Them Your Own

One of the best parts of this Back to School treat is how easy it is to personalize.

Try etching:

  • ABC
  • 123
  • A child’s name
  • Their new grade
  • An apple
  • A pencil
  • First Day!
  • Good Luck!
  • A simple heart, star or smiley face

You can even put out chocolate bars, skewers and confectioners’ sugar and let the kids design their own.

Full Chocolate Bars or Mini Chalkboards

Use an entire chocolate bar to create one larger chalkboard, or break the chocolate into smaller sections to make individual mini chalkboards.

The smaller version is especially cute for class treats, party favors or an after-school snack.
