A Fun & Easy Lag BaOmer Craft: Bonfire Scene in a Cup

Many of you have been following along on our hike with Shalom and Ahuva using our adorable Sefira chart by Bellinger Art. Now we’re stopping along the way for a fun bonfire craft!

Lag BaOmer is all about gathering around a glowing bonfire, sharing stories, and enjoying time together. If you’re looking for a simple, creative project that captures that cozy feeling—this bonfire scene in a cup is perfect. With just a few basic supplies and a printable, kids can create their own mini campfire that actually comes to life when they blow through a straw!

Another fun idea is to decorate a battery-operated tea light with tissue paper flames and small branches to create a cozy “mini bonfire” effect.

You can also skip the fire part of the printable and use this idea as a container for our Bonfire Cookie or mini Bonfire Cupcake

Why This Craft Is a Winner

This project checks all the boxes:

  • Uses simple, inexpensive supplies
  • Great for camps, classrooms, or at-home fun
  • Encourages creativity and hands-on play
  • Doubles as a fun toy after crafting

It’s especially perfect for Lag BaOmer, but honestly, it works just as well for summer camp themes or rainy-day activities.

What You’ll Need

  • Printable bonfire scene (featuring a boy and girl sitting by the fire)
  • 16 ounce clear plastic cups
  • markers or crayons
  • scissors
  • double-sided tape
  • glue gun
  • razor
  • red, yellow and orange tissue paper
  • straws
  • twigs
  • battery operated tea lights (optional)

How It Works

The magic of this craft is in the movement. Kids build a layered scene inside a cup, then add small paper “flames.” When they blow through a straw inserted into the side, the confetti swirls—making the fire flicker just like a real bonfire!

Perfect For…

  • Lag BaOmer celebrations
  • Day camps & schools
  • Playdates or group activities
  • Summer crafts at home

A Craft That Sparks Joy

There’s something special about combining creativity with a little bit of magic. This bonfire-in-a-cup craft captures the warmth and excitement of Lag BaOmer in a way kids can see and play with.

Whether you’re crafting with a classroom full of kids or just around your kitchen table, this is one of those projects that’s simple—but unforgettable.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Color & Prep the Scene

Start by coloring and cutting the printables. Let kids bring the scene to life—blue skies, glowing fire, fun clothing for the characters.

2. Assemble the Cup Scene

Cut out the picture and use double-sided tape to attach it to the inside of the cup.

3. Create the Flame

Fold the flame piece along the dotted line and glue or tape the tab down to the circle. Match the dotted lines to each other.

Add twigs using a glue gun.

Alternately, you can use the cover of the cup as the floor. This may be more practical when working with larger groups.

To make the battery tea light flame, cut the tissue paper into flames and attach them to the tea light with double sided tape. Use a glue gun to attach twigs. Make sure not to cover the switch on the bottom. Use a coffee cup cover for the floor.

4. Add the “Fire Sparks”

Cut the tissue paper into small confetti pieces and drop some into the cup. These will swirl when you blow into the straw.

5. Make the Air Hole

Using your razor, cut an X  on the side of the cup, about ½ inch from the bottom of the cup (on the side of the scene).

6. Seal the Top

Lining up the star on the circle and the star on the bottom of the scene, glue the circle onto the rim of the cup to close it. It is best to use a glue gun.

7. Bring It to Life!

Insert a straw into the hole and blow gently—watch the confetti dance and the fire come alive!
