Unlocking Blessings: A Shlissel Challah With a Twist 🔑
Every year, right after Pesach, Jewish kitchens come alive with the warm, yeasty scent of Shlissel Challah. For generations, the tradition of baking a “key challah” has symbolized opening the gates of heaven for livelihood, health, and abundance in the coming year.
Tradition Meets Creativity
While many stick to the classic braided challah with a key tucked inside or on top, there’s room to reimagine the custom while keeping the deep meaning. In this post, we’re sharing a unique twist on Shlissel Challah.
A lobster key chain works very well with this idea. I only found them after the shoot.
You will need:
- challah dough
- toppings (for sweet crumbs, you can use the crumbs from The Perfect Chocolate Babka.)
- lobster lanyard key chains
- wraps
- key chain cookie cutter
- straw
Directions:
- Braid the challah and begin baking it as you normally would.
- After about 20 minutes or once the outside of the challah becomes unsticky, stick the round part of the key chain in the challah. The reason for this is because you don’t want the key chain stuck in the dough making it hard to open and put the keys on.
- Use the cookie cutter to cut keys out of the wraps. Cut out a hole on the top of the key using a straw.
- Place the keys on the key ring after the challah is done baking.
