Bushel of Apple-Shaped Challah

A Rosh Hashanah Challah Centerpiece Featured in Family Table Magazine

We first introduced our Apple-Shaped Challah for Rosh Hashanah in 2019, and since then, they’ve become a beloved “tradition” in countless homes, appearing year after year on Yom Tov tables.

This year, we’re giving our classic Challah Apples a fresh new twist! Featured in Family Table Magazine, this Bushel of Apple-Shaped Challah takes those individual apple rolls and turns them into a beautiful, completely edible Rosh Hashanah centerpiece.

A basket made out of challah, filled with challah apples—how fun is that?

Be sure to check out our original Apple-Shaped Challah for step-by-step directions for making the apples.

Make an Edible Challah Basket

The basket looks impressive on the table, but it’s actually quite simple to create. All you need is a basic metal mixing bowl to use as your mold.

Once baked and filled with apple-shaped challahs, it looks like a little bushel of freshly picked apples—perfect for Rosh Hashanah!

You’ll Need

  • Any size metal mixing bowl
(The bowl we used was 7 inches in diameter.)
  • Approximately 1½–2 pounds challah dough, depending on the size of your bowl
  • Egg wash
  • Cooking spray
  • Toothpicks

How to Make the Challah Basket

Please note: It is best to shape the basket and handles before the dough rises.

  1. Turn a metal mixing bowl upside down on a cookie sheet and spray it very well with cooking spray.
  2. Roll the challah dough into one long rope, or make a very long, thin three-strand braid.
  3. Wrap the dough around the outside of the bowl to create the basket shape. You can wrap the dough all the way around, or cover the bottom with a flat piece of dough instead of continuing the wrapped design
  4. For the handles, roll two thin ropes of challah dough and shape each one into a “C.” Place them on a separate small tray so you can bake them separately from the basket.
  5. Brush the basket and handles with egg wash and bake until golden. Keep an eye on the handles, as they will bake more quickly and should be removed from the oven before the basket.
  6. Allow the basket to cool completely before carefully removing it from the metal bowl.
  7. Once everything has cooled, attach the handles to the basket with toothpicks.

Fill Your Basket with Apple-Shaped Challah

Once your basket is assembled, fill it with our Apple-Shaped Challah rolls. Suddenly, a simple batch of challah becomes a beautiful bushel of apples that can take center stage on your Rosh Hashanah table.

And, of course, the best part is that your guests can eat the entire centerpiece!
