Over the past few years we have featured many Yom tov themed challah ideas.
Everyone is of course familiar with our Apple Challah Rolls, which went viral!
Unbeknownst to me, I recently found out that baking special shaped challos for Yom Tov was actually an old minhag in certain communities (including mine!).
Making a sweet crumb topping for Rosh Hashana is a nice change from the usual savory taste.
You will need:
- challah dough shaped into even balls.
- sweet crumbs (such as the crumbs in this babka recipe)
- red food coloring
- large round flat pans
- faux or real leaves
Directions: `
- Arrange challah dough balls in a round pan.
- Add food coloring to all or just some of the crumbs.
- Brush challah with egg.
- Sprinkle the crumbs on top.
- Bake
