Bee Hive Challah – A Sweet Surprise for Rosh Hashanah
Looking for a truly special honey dish for Rosh Hashanah this year? Meet the Bee Hive Challah—a stunning, whimsical, and totally functional centerpiece that brings together sweetness, symbolism, and surprise.
This unique challah is shaped like a beehive and cleverly designed to hold a small honey dish inside. The top “lid” is a mini round challah, completing the look and forming lechem mishneh—two loaves, as required on Shabbos and Yom Tov.
Whether you’re hosting or gifting, this challah will leave a lasting impression at your Yom Tov table.
What You’ll Need
homemade or store-bought challah dough
1 small ramekin (about 2″ in diameter)
large tube pan (a 2-piece tube pan works best)
egg wash
cooking spray

Directions
1. Prepare the Tube Pan
Spray the bottom of the tube pan generously with cooking spray to prevent sticking. This will form the base of your hive.
2. Form the Hive
Roll out a long strand of challah dough. Begin wrapping it around the bottom of the tube pan, spiraling upward like a beehive. Tuck in the ends to secure.
3. Make the Lid
Form a small round challah using a separate piece of dough—this will become the “lid” of your beehive and the second loaf for lechem mishneh.
4. Egg Wash & Bake
Brush both parts of the challah with egg wash for a glossy finish. Bake according to your dough’s recipe instructions until golden brown.
5. Add the Honey Dish
Once baked and slightly cooled, remove the base challah from the tube pan. Gently press a small ramekin into the center cavity of the hive.
6. Fill & Cover
Fill the ramekin with honey and place the mini round challah on top as a lid. Voilà—your bee hive challah is ready to shine!
Serving Tips
Place the beehive on a platter with apple slices around it for a beautiful presentation.
Add edible flowers or bee-shaped sugar decorations for extra flair.
After dipping your apples in the honey, slice the challah and enjoy!
A Sweet New Year
This bee hive challah is more than just a showstopper—it’s a heartfelt way to bring the themes of the holiday to life. As you dip your apple into the honey nestled inside the challah, you’re partaking in a tradition that’s both ancient and newly reimagined.
